Public Performances of "Romeo and Juliet".The general public in Ely and district were treated for two evenings to performances of William Shakespeare's play "Romeo and Juliet". It was a brave attempt, especially for an all girl cast, but they certainly gave, to the best of their ability, a very realistic performance. Both the love scenes between Romeo (Mary Wilkins) and Juliet (Christine Carver), and the sword fights were particularly effective, and were the result of much hard work and practice. The excellent scenery and the colourful costumes, many of which were made, under the direction of Miss Reynolds, especially for the play, also helped the already praise-worthy production. However, the credit for the success of the performance rests with the brilliant producing by Mrs Hawes. We thank particularly Mr Legge, Mr Bailey and Mr Labdon for their invaluable help in the design and erection of the balcony.
