ELY HIGH SCHOOL
A SERVICE OF THANKSGIVING
for
BERTHA TILLY
SATURDAY, JULY 12th, 1980
ELY CATHEDRAL
By kind permission of the Dean and Chapter.
The Bidding
We are met in the Presence of God to remember Bertha Tilly whose life, in its long course and range of interests, has touched each one of us at some point and has brought us here today in thankfulness.
Prayer
Lift up our souls, O Lord, to the pure serene light of Thy presence, that there we may breathe freely, there repose in Thy love, there may be at rest from ourselves in Thy peace, to do and to bear what shall please Thee. Amen.
SCHOOL HYMN
O God, Whose Light flows in the golden sunshine,
In the white glory of the moon by night,
In gleam of stars, in all that's clear and lovely,
Shed in our hearts the radiance of that light,
Let no blind shadow hide Thee from our sight.All that is true and beautiful Thou shapest,
Wide spaces, mountains, cloud in spreading skies,
The birds, the coloured flowers, the shining waters,
May we behold there with rejoicing eyes
And make our lives a thankful sacrifice.Thou framed'st the Universe and it is goodly,
Thou fashioned'st man and set his spirit free:
Help us in little things to seek the highest,
Guard us from sluggard insincerity,
That all we think and do be fit for Thee.Thine is the Love which passeth understanding,
Thy Spirit comes to comfort us, and bless;
May Thou abide in us and give us power
To venture on in joyful steadfastness,
And build Thy Holy Kingdom in this place.THE FIRST READING
The Epistle of St Paul to the Phillippians: IV, 1-8
THE SECOND READING
The Revelation of St John: XXI, 1-7
HYMN
The Lord's my Shepherd, I'll not want:
He makes me down to lie
In pastures green; he leadeth me
The quiet waters by.My soul he doth restore again,
And me to walk doth make
Within the paths of righteousness,
E'en for his own Name's sake.Yea, though I walk in death's dark vale,
Yet will I fear no ill;
For thou art with me, and thy rod.
And staff me comfort still.My table thou hast furnished
In presence of my foes;
My head thou dost with oil anoint,
And my cup overflows.Goodness and mercy all my life
Shall surely follow me;
And in God's house for evermore,
My dwelling-place shall be.A COMMEMORATION
by Old Students of the School
PRAYERS
O Lord, we keep in happy remembrance those who have gone before, especially her who is in our thoughts today. She has stood by us and helped us, she has cheered us by her sympathy. Grant that strengthened by her example, we may seize every opportunity of life and rejoice in the promise of a glorious resurrection. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Thou bast shown us, O Lord, what is good. help us, we beseech Thee, to do what Thou requirest, to act justly, to love mercy, to walk humbly with our God. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory. For ever and ever. Amen.
HYMN
Praise, my soul, the King of heaven,
To his feet thy tribute bring;
Ransom'd, heal'd, restor'd, forgiven,
Who like me his praise should sing?
Praise him! Praise him!
Praise the everlasting King.Praise him for his grace and favour
To our fathers in distress;
Praise him, still the same for ever,
Slow to chide, and swift to bless:
Praise him! Praise him!
Glorious in his faithfulness.Father-like, he tends and spares us,
Well our feeble frame he knows;
In his hands he gently bears us,
Rescues us from all our foes;
Praise him! Praise him!
Widely as his mercy flows.Angels, help us to adore him;
Ye behold him face to face;
Sun and moon bow down before him,
Dwellers all in time and space:
Praise him! Praise him!
Praise with us the God of grace.To be sung kneeling
God be in my head,
And in my understanding;
God be in mine eyes,
And in my looking;
God be in my mouth,
And in my speaking;
God be in my heart,
And in my thinking;
God be at mine end,
And at my departing.PRAYER
O Eternal Lord God, who holdest all souls in life; we beseech thee to shed forth upon Thy whole church in paradise and on earth the bright beams of Thy light and heavenly comfort; and grant that we following the good example of those who have loved and served thee here and are now at rest, may at the last enter with them into the fulness of Thine unending joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.THE BLESSING
